What is a CSV converter?

CSV (comma-separated values) is the simplest way to move table data between programs. Every spreadsheet can export it, and every database can import it. The catch is that a CSV is just text, and the moment you need the same data as JSON for an API, as a SQL script for a database, or as a table in a README, you are stuck reformatting by hand.

This tool does the reshaping for you. It reads quoted fields properly (so a value like "Mumbai, India" stays in one cell), copes with line breaks inside quotes, and detects whether your file uses commas, semicolons, tabs or pipes. Conversions between formats happen instantly in your browser.

If you end up with JSON that needs tidying, run it through the JSON Formatter. If you plan to load the data into a database, the SQL Formatter will make the generated statements easy to read.

How to convert a CSV file

  1. Paste your CSV into the input box or click Open file to load a .csv or .tsv file.
  2. Choose what you want to convert to from the Convert to list.
  3. Leave the delimiter on Auto-detect unless the result looks wrong. If your first row is not a header, untick First row is header.
  4. Tick Detect numbers and booleans if you want 42 to become a number instead of the text "42" in JSON and SQL.
  5. Copy the output or download it as a file.

Typical jobs

  • Turning a spreadsheet export into JSON for a web app or API test.
  • Generating INSERT statements to seed a database table from a CSV.
  • Pasting a clean table into a GitHub README or documentation page as Markdown.
  • Switching a semicolon-separated export (common in Excel for European locales) to a normal comma CSV.
  • Flattening an API response (JSON) into rows you can open in Excel or Google Sheets.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV to JSON?

Paste the CSV, leave Convert to on JSON (array of objects) and the first row is used as the key names. Each following row becomes one object. Tick Detect numbers and booleans if you want real numbers instead of strings.

What if my CSV uses semicolons or tabs?

The tool detects commas, semicolons, tabs and pipes automatically by looking at the first few lines. If it guesses wrong, pick the delimiter yourself from the list.

How are commas and quotes inside a field handled?

Fields wrapped in double quotes can contain commas, line breaks and escaped quotes (written as two double quotes). That is the standard CSV format (RFC 4180), and it is what Excel and Google Sheets produce.

Can I convert JSON to CSV?

Yes. Choose JSON to CSV and paste an array of objects. The column headings are taken from the keys. Nested objects and arrays are stored as JSON text inside the cell, because CSV cannot hold nested data.

Which SQL dialect does the INSERT output use?

You can pick MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite or SQL Server. The difference is how column names are quoted: backticks, double quotes or square brackets. Text values are always single-quoted with quotes escaped.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and the file you open is read locally. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
