If all you sell is a PDF, a template pack or a zip file, WooCommerce is a lot of machinery. Carts, shipping zones, tax classes, a product catalogue, and dozens of extra settings you’ll never touch. It works, but it also means more to update, more to secure and a slower site.

There’s a lighter way. Put a resource on a page, set a price, let Razorpay take the payment, and let the buyer download the file straight after. I’ll walk through how that works with LeadMagnet Pro, and be clear about when WooCommerce is still the better choice.
When you don’t need WooCommerce
You can skip it if:
- You sell digital files only. No shipping, no stock.
- You sell a handful of products, not hundreds.
- Customers pay one price, once, per item.
- You’d rather collect an email address and a payment in one step.
You should use WooCommerce (or something similar) if you need a shopping cart with several items, physical goods, product variations, tax invoices generated per order, or a big catalogue with filters.
What you need
- LeadMagnet (free). It handles the form, the resource and the protected download. See how to create a lead magnet in WordPress if you haven’t set that up.
- LeadMagnet Pro. This is the paid add-on that unlocks charging for a resource, promo codes and the Razorpay checkout. You need an active licence from the LeadMagnet page.
- A Razorpay account with API keys. Test keys are enough to start.
- HTTPS on your site. Payment pages need it, and so does Razorpay.
Set it up
Install both plugins
Install and activate the free LeadMagnet first, then LeadMagnet Pro. Open LeadMagnet → Pro Licence, paste the key from your purchase email and press Activate. It will show Pro as active, your plan and how many sites you’ve used.
Add your Razorpay keys
In the Razorpay dashboard, go to Settings → API Keys and generate a key pair. In WordPress, open LeadMagnet → Settings, paste the Key ID and Key Secret, and tick Enable Razorpay. Start with Razorpay’s test keys.
Price a resource
Edit any resource. With Pro active, Require Payment is available. Set the price and currency and save. The button on the form changes to Continue to Payment.
Put the usual shortcode on a page, [leadmagnet id="..."], and that page is now a sales page for your file.
Promo codes
LeadMagnet → Promo Codes is where you create launch discounts. Handy for a first batch of buyers or a newsletter exclusive.
Test before real money
With test keys on:
- Open the page in a private window.
- Buy using one of Razorpay’s published test cards.
- Confirm the download works and the email arrives.
- Check the buyer appears under LeadMagnet → Leads & Downloads.
Do it twice, including once where you close the tab straight after paying, to see that the file still reaches the buyer.
Going live
Razorpay will want to see a few things before they activate a live account: a business, your contact details, and usually public pages for refunds and cancellation, privacy, terms and delivery. Have those ready. I’ve put plain-English starting points for the refund and cancellation and digital delivery pages on this site, which you’re welcome to adapt, but have anything legal checked by someone qualified.
Then swap in live keys and test with one real, small purchase.
What this doesn’t do
I’d rather you know now:
- It’s not a cart. One resource, one payment.
- It doesn’t generate GST invoices. If you need those, you’ll need to handle invoicing separately.
- It’s Razorpay only. No PayPal or Stripe.
If those are dealbreakers, use WooCommerce. If they’re not, you’ll have a faster, simpler shop.
If your licence lapses
Pro switches off, but nothing is deleted. Your keys, paid resources and promo codes stay as they are. Paid resources show a message that the gateway is unavailable until you renew, then everything comes back. Here’s how licences work.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need WooCommerce to sell downloads with Razorpay?
No. LeadMagnet Pro handles the payment page, the protected download and the confirmation email without WooCommerce.
Does LeadMagnet Pro work with UPI and cards?
It uses Razorpay’s own checkout, so the payment methods your buyers see are the ones you’ve enabled in your Razorpay account.
Is the download protected after payment?
Yes. Each download link is signed and single-use, and it’s also emailed to the buyer.
Can I offer discount codes?
Yes. LeadMagnet → Promo Codes is part of Pro.
Can I sell in USD?
Yes. You can price a resource in INR, USD, EUR, GBP, AED, SGD or AUD. For international cards, international payments must be switched on in your Razorpay account.
Does it make GST invoices?
No. Plan to issue invoices yourself or with another tool, and check what applies to your business with an accountant.
What happens if my Pro licence expires?
Pro features switch off, and nothing is deleted. Renew and everything returns.
